A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxies of Cells and Bioengineering

11. October 2023 @ 19:30 21:00

Ina Holler from the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics and Richard Best from B CUBE – Center for Molecular Bioengineering are taking you on a journey through your nerve cells and the world of bioengineering.

First, we embark on an adventure: Together with the RNA, Ina sets off hitchhiking on the herculean path to the nerve synapse. "Excuse me, could you take me with you?" asks the RNA of the round transport vesicle passing by. "Well, of course, hop on! Where are you headed?" The RNA thinks for a moment. "To the synapse, please!" it responds, greeting the other RNA molecules that have also made themselves comfortable on the vesicle. It's relieved - alone and without a means of transport, it likely wouldn't have made this long journey! It's already looking forward to the destination of its voyage through the long branches of the nerve cell – there, its message will be translated into a protein and fulfill the task it was hired for! Discover together with Ina what awaits the RNA at the end of its journey.

Our next feature sounds like science fiction: Richard explores how an organism combines organic and inorganic materials. Cyborgs? No. This is about biomineralization – a process in which an organism forms mineral products. This hapens in the bones of animals, humans and even in the shells of mussels. Richard is particularly interested in the physical forces that modulate this process. Find out how Richard applies his findings to develop new bio-inspired materials.

The event will be held in German. Admission is free. Der Eintritt ist frei.
